Quo Vadis, Pinoy?

Mga kababayan,

Meron akong gustong ibahagi para sa ating lahat na mga PILIPINO.
Simple pero parang mahirap gawin ng karamihan sa atin. Hindi ito
makukuha sa puro daldalan lang or walang kabuluhang pagtatalo,
kumilos tayo ngayon na.

Sa ibang bansa: Pag nagkasala ang Pinoy, pinarusahan siya ayon sa batas.

Sa PINAS: Pag nagkasala ang ang Pinoy, ayaw niyang maparusahan kasi sabi niya mali
raw ang batas.

Sa ibang bansa: Pinag-aaralan muna ng Pinoy ang mga batas bago siya pumunta roon,
kasi takot siyang magkamali.
Sa PINAS: Pag nagkamali ang Pinoy, sorry kasi hindi raw niya alam na labag sa batas yon.

Sa ibang bansa: Kahit gaano kataas ang bilihin at tax sa USA okey lang, katuwiran natin
doble kayod na lang.
Sa PINAS: mahilig ka sa last day para magbayad ng tax minsan dinadaya mo pa o kaya
hindi ka nagbabayad. Rally ka kaagad kapag tumaas ang pasahe at bilihin
imbes na magsipag mas gusto natin ang nagkukwentuhan lang sa munisipyo o
kahit sa alinmang tanggapan.

Sa Singapore : Kapag nahuli kang nagkalat or nagtapon ng basura sa hindi tamang lugar,
magbabayad ka na 500 Singapore dollars. Sabi ng Pinoy, Okey lang kasi
lumabag ako sa batas.

Sa Pinas: Kapag nagkamali ang Pinoy katulad nang ganito, Sabi ng Pinoy, ang lupit
naman ni Bayani Fernando , mali naman ang pinaiiral niyang batas eh akala mo
kung sino. Ayun nag-rally na ang Pinoy gustong patalsikin si Bayani Fernando
kahit na alam niyang mali siya.

Mga igan, ilan pa lang iyan baka may iba pa kayong alam. Bakit ang PINOY, pwedeng maging "law abiding citizen sa ibang bansa ng walang angal" pero sa sarili nating na
sinasabi ninyong mahal natin, eh hindi natin magawa, BAKIIITTTTT?????????

My Fellow Filipinos,

When I was small, the Philippine peso was P7 to the dollar. The president was Diosdado Macapagal. Life was simple. Life was easy. My father was a farmer. My mother kept a small sari-sari store where our neighbors bought sang-perang asin, sang-perang bagoong, sang-perang suka, sang-perang toyo at pahinging isang butil na bawang. Our backyard had
kamatis, kalabasa, talong, ampalaya, upo, batao, and okra.

Our silong had chicken. We had a pig, dog & cat. And of course, we lived on the farm. During rainy season, my father caught frogs at night which my mother made into batute (stuffed frog), or just plain fried.

During the day, he caught hito and dalag from his rice paddies, which he would usually inihaw. During dry season, we relied on the chickens, vegetables, bangus, tuyo, and tinapa. Every now and then, there was pork and beef from the town market.

Life was so peaceful, so quiet, no electricity, no TV. Just the radio for Tia Dely, Roman Rapido, Tawag ng Tanghalan and Tang-tarang-tang. And who can forget Leila Benitez on Darigold Jamboree?

On weekends, I played with my neighbors (who were all my cousins). Tumbang-preso, taguan, piko, luksong lubid, patintero, at iba pa. I* don't know about you, but I miss those days.

These days, we face the TV, Internet, e-mail, newspaper, magazine, grocery catalog, or drive around. The peso is a staggering and incredible P54 to the dollar, now appreciated
to P48.

Most people can't have fun anymore. Life has become a battle. We live to work. Work to live. Life is not easy.I was in Saudi Arabia in 1983. It was lonely, difficult, & scary. It
didn't matter if you were a man or a woman. You were a target for rape. The salary was cheap & the vacation far between. If the boss didn't want you to go on holiday, you didn't. They had your passport. Oh, and the agency charged you almost 4months of your salary
(which, if you had to borrow on a "20% per month arrangement" meant your first year's pay was all gone before you even earned it).

The Philippines used to be one of the most important countries in Asia . Before & during my college days, many students from neighboring Asian countries like Malaysia , Indonesia , Japan and China went to the Philippines to get their diplomas. Until 1972, like President
Macapagal, President Marcos was one of the most admired presidents of the world. The Peso had kept its value of P7 to the dollar until I finished college.

Today, the Philippines is famous as the "housemaid" capital of the world. It ranks very high as the "cheapest labor" capital of the world, too. We have maids in Hong Kong , laborers in Saudi Arabia , dancers in Japan , migrants and TNTs in Australia and the US , and all sorts of other "tricky" jobs in other parts of the globe.

Action in Election

University Student council election, the time to choose student representatives, the one who can voice the sentiments and find solutions to the cries of their fellow student, Sa sintang paaralan nakita ko ang tila pinaliit na Pilipinas tuwing darating ang eleksyon,,, Partidong naglalaban at bawat isa'y hinahain ang knya-knyang programa. Pnu nga ba pipili ang mga estudyante??

Maybe I'll be sound biased for i'm one of those person behind Kilos!pup- one of the major political party in PUP but before i came here I'm just one ordinary student observing and making choices from those organizations saying they are pro-students. Nakita ko ang gulo, siraan at dumi ng eleksyon, ngunit kung bwat estudyante ay bubuksan lamang ang knlang mga mata at isip sa tunay na nangyayari makakamit ntin ang pagbabago.

THE SAMASA-KILOS SQUARE OFF

Activism has been in the core of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines for almost two decades. It has been the haven for political activists and communists. The usual noise of the university is a flurry of megaphones and screaming "students." What everyone treats as a news on TV is a daily occurrence in the university. Ironically, they only represent 10% of the student population in PUP. If activism is such a good political and ideological exercise, why then, does it leave a bad taste to most of the PUPians? What makes activism in PUP unattractive?

Sandigan ng Mag-aaral para sa Sambayanan (SAMASA) is unquestionably in the forefront of student activism in PUP. Whenever a national issue is bothering the nation, they are always ready to march the streets and wave their red flags. “Tunay, palaban, makabayan!” is their usual battle cry.

Any naïve college freshman will naturally greet their marches with awe. At first, they would feel proud that they have activists who show “genuine” concern with national issues. If so, what turns us PUPians off?

We are students. We study. They don’t.
We are poor. We try not to look poorly. They don’t.
We have classes. We try not to be absent in classes. They don’t.
We need to graduate. We try all means to graduate. They don’t.
We compete. We strive for academic excellence. They don’t.

I will never forget Joan, the big, fat, intimidating Samasa activist. I’ve seen her around campaigning against Erap when I was a freshman. After I graduate, I entered graduate school. Sometimes we hold classes in the main campus. To my surprise, I still saw her campaigning for a particular issue. Hasn’t she graduated? I wonder.

Kilos PUPian, a rising force coming from the Kabataang Liberal ng Pilipinas PUP Chapter is the group that poses a threat in the leadership of Samasa in the Central Student Council. Their fight is to strive for academic excellence. Their former battle cry “Kilos PUPian: Oras Natin ‘To!” proved otherwise as they were unable to unseat the Samasa tribe in the Central Student Council last 2006 elections with a small margin of roughly 300 votes. Now, their tagline goes “PUPians: Astig Maging Iba.” It seems they are weary of the control of the antiquated Samasa regime in PUP so they are posing as an alternative to the leadership.

Kilos represents the 90% students who would rather study than go off the streets to be dispersed by water cannons. They represent those who cram for exams; those who spend overnights to finish their thesis; those who save their allowances to rent a computer in internet shops; those who aspire graduating soon to find work; those who want to do away with poverty; and those who are too tired of politics that they opt to occupy themselves with schoolwork.

This coming PUP CSC Elections, it will again be a battle between SAMASA and KILOS. The square off continues -- a square off between student activism versus academic excellence. PUPians will choose. I just hope they realize their important role in improving the image and perspective of PUP.

Sana lamang, maging numero uno tayo sa pagpapalakas ng ekonomiya; hindi sa pagtatayo ng unyon!

camp in ilocos

new adventure again going to ilocos sur... another experience with kalipi family...
this is my first time to facilitate in a camp... a hard but a happy experience..

mahirap pala humawak ng grupo, pero enjoy... plz... bwal mag-ilocano, dko po maintindihan.. (ngiti na lang)...

first impression ng group q skin.. i'm mataray, tahimik, dmo matimbang daw kung mabait o masungit,,, ty sa ngsabi n mukha akong matalino mukha lng,,, i enjoy my group kht ang hirap kumanta kc polsci dw cla, ksma aq,,, nakakaktuwa that they appreciate me,, my first time to be facilitator is so fun,, salamat sa gift ng grupo q na dko inaasahan... mwah!!! tnx for the hapi moments.. hope to see you again!!!

Bohol trip

it's so fun to experience travelling on other places with different people who for the first time you only met....

it's fun to learn and met new friends with diff. culture and with different languages..
(d ako Maka relate sa joke na bisaya... tagalog plz....)

maexperience na makapunta a chocolate hills na sa libro lang makikita and of course mahiyain na tarsier...

i learn alot from everyone i met... humanga ka, nagalit, naasar at natawa sa mga tao at pangyayayri sa paligid mo...

commitee meetings till 12 midnight and plenary sessions till 5 am... and gcing uli to start at 8 or 9 am.... o db d xa bsta pasyal may halong sakit ng katawan at pagod...

i wish dat this experience will come again..

i hope that i can still meet my muslim, cebuanos, bisaya, and from mindanao friends....

The sham that is the 6th NYP

(this is one of the thing that i'm really curious about the last 6th NYP)

At the National youth Parliament (NYP), youth leaders are to deliberate on youth policy issues that would strengthen their role in nation-building. Its beauty rests on the fact that the youth themselves are involved in crafting high-impact policy recommendations.

So much for such beauty…

The 6th NYP convened at a time when the Filipino youth are called once again to make history by standing against the tide of political un certainties – has shown itself unworthy of the splendor of the youth participation in policy-making. The hovering issue of constitutional reform, now being at the fore of the country’s political and social life, is no doubt the primary policy agenda that the Youth Parliamentarians are to deliberate and decide on. The output of the 6th NYP with regard to constitutional reform is most crucial in charting our future or subtly, the future of our political leaders- the reason being that NYC’S NYP is the legitimate voice of the youth in government. Most importantly, the resolution on constitutional reform to be passed by this NYP shall stir the country into thinking that the Filipino youth has finally made a stand, which is good, given that they (the youth) have been silent about the issue and have not signified willingness to even engage in it.

Through NYP, the National Youth Commission under the Office of the President has found the best venue to come up with the official stand of the youth on cha-cha. As such, they have grabbed every opportunity to blatantly manipulate the processes leading to the outcome they so desire – which is to give a nod to the changing of the 1987 constitution. This has become increasingly apparent.

The members of the6th NYP are put in a situation where their functions as parliamentarians are bypassed to the effect that the parliamentary exercise is made futile because the environment of debate is mired with railroading. Gone is the very reason of NYP to be convened for deliberation and resolution of issues when a stand on cha-cha is already in place.

A thorough check on the process of cha-cha issue resolution as of today reveals that there were and will be deliberate attempts on the part of NYC to block or limit attempts of questioning. It is understood that the issue on cha-cha demands for a thorough presentation of ideas from the youth from both sides. But it must also be respected by all WHEN, AND ONLY WHEN THIS STAND WAS CREATED THROUGH TRANSPARENT AND DUE PROCESS without the muzzling of any voice.

The first time I made a testi to this person I said. “I’m looking forward to have him as my professor” (sapilitan pa kc dati paggawa ng testi para sa kanya)

Since high school I always hear from my teachers, that “inside the classroom I am your strict teacher and outside I can be our friend”... But I never see it to them, for they are my teachers who will only talk about their lessons in and out of the campus. I said to myself, “teachers are teachers and they can’t be no other person.”

Then college time, I met this person, the first time I knew him, he want to be called “kuya” not “sir”. I see him as a very respected professor, and outside his students is still respecting him as an elder brother. I just wonder what’s in this person at all.

I’m so lucky that despite the fact that he is planning to leave, I got a chance to have him as my professor... Proven, he is an extraordinary one…

A semester end at Political Science department and at the end of our class with him, he gave a very touching speech to all of us. I can’t help but cry as he delivered it, I tried not to listen and tried to think other things but still I can hear him, and my tears can’t stop from falling,,, he told a story on how he unknowingly change the life of one of his student,,, and as I listen what I think is how he also touch the life of mine…

Maybe if I didn’t meet him, I’m not still a political science student and shifted to other course. Maybe I’ve missed all the knowledge, missed all the fun, missed knowing special people around me, missed great lessons in life, and most important of it I missed the times knowing him…

Mr. Jan-Argy Tolentino, is once the Emperor (Emperor’s Club), and the Coach (Coach Carter) of our life,,, but he will always be the Kuya and the Special Person who I will never forget…

My Choice

I go to a university which activism is its trademark. I enter here with my childish acts and knowledge of my high school years. Having a curious mind I get a course complicated enough to change my world and say “I want to change the world”. My training-ground offers a lot of ideas and ways for change; like a market, you can choose what road, what ideology and what actions you will take. For freshmen students you will be amazed, be frightened or be excited with the shouts of thoughts you’ve been hearing left and right, but what is left is for you to decide; will you answer the call or close your ears in the four corners of the room.

My freshmen professor once said it’s good to be an activist. An activist who knows what’s happening around her, and didn’t just absorb it but react and do rational actions on it. We’re so lucky that we are immersed on the real life… Lot of organizations say they are the activist that I am looking for, the real advocate of students. But the question is… “What can I do, for I am just a youth, send to school to study? In line of these organizations, one of them stands different.

It is an organization who demands for change and action but does not call for violent revolution but a revolution of individual attitudes. They ask for genuine reforms and do rational actions. They are courageous to speak about our society’s problem, ask difficult questions and propose bold solutions. They speak what’s in their mind and show the real them. They debate intellectually with the issues, not fooled easily and stand still till the end on what they are fighting. I see how they are ready to face the generations challenge even behind Athem are obstacles, loses and sacrifices.

I’m proud to be part of this organization, the “Kabataang Liberal ng Pilipinas”.

I learn knowledge not only on the world which I am concerned but also lessons about life. I does not only gain new ideas but also gain friends who are worth keeping… and I know I made the best choice.
